San Antonio’s Merit Coffee Company claimed two gold medals at the 2026 Global Coffee Awards, distinguishing its signature Lucem blend and an unreleased Peru Gesha Natural. The recognition, based on a rigorous double-blind evaluation by international coffee professionals, underscores the roaster’s influence across its 15 Texas cafés and retail distribution network.
Behind these roasts is Carlos Riaño, Merit’s Head Roaster and Q Grader. His technical precision earned him a qualifying spot in the upcoming United States Coffee Roasting Championship this December. Beyond the two gold honors, Merit secured five bronze medals, including recognition for Camino de Oro, Patlanalan Community, Saddle Up, and Sugarcane Decaf. These seven total awards reflect the roaster's broad sensory impact, as judges evaluated the entries on aroma, balance, sweetness, and acidity.
