European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen formally invited Canada to become the bloc’s first associate member during her State of the Union address in Strasbourg on Wednesday. The proposal, aimed at deepening a unique alliance, received a standing ovation from MEPs and marks a shift in transatlantic integration.
Negotiations will build upon existing frameworks, including a planned digital trade agreement expected by late October. Defence cooperation remains a central pillar of the partnership, following a recent agreement granting Canada access to the EU’s €800bn procurement scheme for €10m. Von der Leyen emphasized that the integration of defence industrial bases and a joint Arctic initiative will serve as the primary engines for this deepening relationship, moving beyond traditional trade pacts toward a unified strategic future.
