Cruise Industry Reports Steady Gains in Environmental Tech Adoption

The global cruise fleet is steadily shifting away from heavy fuel oil, with over 39% of total fuel use now coming from cleaner alternatives. New data from the Cruise Lines International Association reveals that investments in shore power, wastewater treatment, and multi-fuel engines are gaining traction across 90% of the industry.

The annual Environmental Technologies and Practices report shows that the industry is modernizing its infrastructure to meet decarbonization goals. While heavy fuel oil usage dropped from 74.2% in 2019 to 60.6% by 2024, cruise lines are increasingly betting on multi-fuel engine technology. The number of ships capable of switching to zero- or near-zero emission fuels has surged from a single vessel in 2018 to 30 today, with 56 expected to be operational by 2030.

Shore power connectivity remains a cornerstone of this transition. Currently, 193 ships are equipped for cold ironing, allowing them to power down engines while docked—a significant jump from 55 ships in 2018. However, CLIA president Bud Darr noted that the full potential of these investments hinges on external factors. Success requires ports and energy providers to scale up the availability of renewable fuels and compatible infrastructure, as fewer than 3% of ports worldwide currently offer shore power at cruise berths.

Beyond emissions, the fleet is prioritizing resource independence and waste reduction. Nearly all reporting ships can now produce freshwater on board, with over 73% capable of meeting their entire water demand without port bunkering. Furthermore, the adoption of advanced wastewater treatment systems has nearly doubled since 2018, now covering 249 vessels. These operational shifts underscore a broader industry effort to move toward sustainable, self-sufficient maritime practices.
