Volkswagen retains the top position with $363 billion in revenue, successfully widening the gap against second-place Shell. While Volkswagen saw a 3% revenue increase, Shell’s revenues dipped by 5% over the same period. Across the board, Europe’s 500 largest companies generated $15.5 trillion in total revenue, marking a 4% rise and accounting for approximately 13% of global GDP. Profits also rebounded, climbing 3% to reach $1 trillion after a previous year of decline, though profit margins tightened to 6.5%.
Corporate restructuring remains a priority, evidenced by a 1% reduction in total headcount to 34.6 million employees. This shift in labor strategy helped drive a 5% increase in revenue per employee. The list also shows incremental progress in executive diversity, reaching a record 43 female CEOs. Despite this peak, women lead only 8.6% of the companies represented, trailing the 11% representation found in the U.S.-based Fortune 500.
