Detroit HVAC experts urge air quality checks ahead of flu season

As Michigan temperatures dip and residents retreat indoors, the risk of circulating respiratory viruses like influenza and RSV climbs. With Americans spending roughly 90% of their time inside, local heating specialists are flagging poor indoor air quality as a primary, yet often overlooked, vulnerability in seasonal health defense.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than the air outside. To mitigate this, Dayna Hottle, general manager at C & C Heating & Air Conditioning, emphasizes that a seasonal HVAC tune-up serves as a critical first step. Ensuring systems run efficiently before the peak of winter prevents the buildup and circulation of harmful airborne pathogens.

Beyond routine maintenance, the company suggests three specific upgrades to improve air hygiene: professional duct cleaning to clear out accumulated mold and dust; the installation of whole-home air filtration systems; and the use of UV germicidal lights, which neutralize bacteria and viruses within the HVAC unit itself. These proactive measures not only reduce infection risks but also contribute to more consistent temperatures and improved sleep quality for homeowners.
