Resume Fabrication and AI Tools Fuel Surge in Candidate Fraud

Nearly every hiring manager has encountered a candidate misrepresenting their credentials, as the proliferation of generative AI tools makes it increasingly simple to fabricate professional history. A new report from RefAssured reveals that while identity theft remains rare, the manipulation of skill sets on resumes has become nearly ubiquitous.

Resume Fabrication and AI Tools Fuel Surge in Candidate Fraud

The survey of 646 professionals and jobseekers illustrates a hiring landscape where trust is rapidly eroding. Data indicates that 84% of HR managers and 76% of staffing recruiters report that fraud is more prevalent today than three years ago. While 98% of corporate hiring managers have caught candidates lying about their qualifications, the most common deception involves inflating skills rather than outright identity theft. Only 4% of HR managers reported encountering identity fraud, whereas 61% have dealt with candidates claiming expertise they do not possess.

This shift is driven by a competitive job market where 81% of applicants find it harder to secure interviews than in previous years. To stand out, 74% of jobseekers now use tools like ChatGPT or Claude to edit their resumes, with 78% explicitly stating that AI makes it easier to appear qualified for roles they have never held. Despite the rise of these technologies, skepticism remains high: only 16% of hiring managers trust automated screening tools to detect such dishonesty without human oversight. Vinda Souza, CMO of RefAssured, notes that the trend is a byproduct of both a demoralizing job market and the ease of access to consumer AI, creating a cycle that undermines the integrity of the entire recruitment process.
