Global Newsrooms Rally to Defend Fact-Based Reporting

More than 1,000 news organizations across 100 countries are preparing to observe World News Day on September 28, a coordinated effort to combat the erosion of public trust. The campaign challenges outlets to pull back the curtain on their editorial processes, demonstrating the rigorous work required to verify facts.

The initiative, which runs from September 25 through October 1, arrives at a critical juncture for the industry. As newsroom budgets shrink and the volume of AI-generated misinformation swells, organizers argue that the profession must pivot from merely reporting stories to explaining the mechanics of journalism itself. By showcasing the editorial labor behind every headline, publishers hope to provide audiences with a tangible benchmark for credibility.

Founded by the Canadian Journalism Foundation in 2018, the project has evolved from a small collective into a global defense of truth. Stig Ørskov, CEO of the World Association of News Publishers, noted that the industry often struggles to highlight its own value, a trend this campaign seeks to reverse. Co-organizer Branko Brkic emphasized that the event serves as a vital rallying point rather than a fundraiser, aimed at making fact-based reporting harder to ignore. Participants gain access to a suite of multilingual resources to amplify a singular message: the public’s right to know depends on the survival of trusted journalism.
