Employees Skeptical of AI in Payroll Without Human Supervision

The survey, which gathered insights from 11,171 respondents, highlights a clear preference for transparency over total automation. When asked what would bolster their confidence in AI-driven payroll, 71% of participants pointed to human oversight as the primary requirement. Proven accuracy and robust data security followed, cited by 57% and 55% of respondents respectively.

This hesitation extends to emerging payment models like earned wage access (EWA). Only 27% of employees expressed interest in accessing wages before their scheduled payday, while 44% explicitly rejected the idea. Crystal Bryant-Minter, general manager at rapid! by Green Dot, noted that while these tools can reduce friction, their success depends on whether workers understand the underlying mechanics. Without deliberate education and transparent communication, the industry faces a difficult path toward widespread adoption.
