Because optical fiber is typically procured a year ahead of actual cable deployment, Lightera is scaling now to meet projected needs for the end of the decade. Chief Executive Officer Holly Hulse noted that the project is designed to deliver both increased volume and the next generation of optical technologies.
Lightera Triples Submarine Fiber Capacity to Meet AI Infrastructure Demand
Lightera is committing to a major capital expansion of its submarine optical fiber manufacturing plants in Denmark and the United States. By 2029, the firm plans to nearly triple its production capacity, aiming to secure its position as a primary supplier for the surging global demand in hyperscale data center connectivity.
Beyond current capacity, the expansion serves as a foundation for the commercialization of multicore fiber, with initial deployments anticipated between 2029 and 2030. This transition is intended to provide a significant boost in transmission capacity for undersea networks. As part of the Furukawa Electric Group, Lightera maintains these sites as its primary global hubs for producing high-performance fiber used in the world’s most demanding communications infrastructure.
