Hikvision pivots to AI-driven video compression amid storage crunch
Nearly 40 percent of security professionals now identify video storage costs as a major operational hurdle, according to a recent survey conducted by asmag and Hikvision. As data volumes swell, the industry is increasingly turning toward intelligent encoding to manage infrastructure demands without compromising critical forensic detail.
Hikvision’s Guanlan Encoding attempts to solve this by integrating its large-scale AI model directly into the compression workflow. The system distinguishes between high-value subjects—such as people and vehicles—and static backgrounds. By allocating more data to moving objects while aggressively compressing peripheral areas, the technology claims to reduce storage requirements by 30 to 50 percent. Adoption is already underway, with 8.3 percent of surveyed professionals reporting active use of the system and over 40 percent expressing familiarity with the solution’s capabilities.
