The agreement, managed by the Joint Science and Technology Office, allows the Department of War to tap into Flagship's network of over 40 companies for rapid medical countermeasure development. Rather than commissioning specific goods, the agency will evaluate a rotating portfolio of platform technologies to address warfighter protection priorities, including toxin neutralization and immune enhancement. To facilitate this, Flagship established a dedicated subsidiary, Flagship Health Security Corporation.
Flagship Pioneering Secures $47 Million Department of War Contract
The Department of War has awarded Flagship Pioneering a five-year, $47 million contract under its ONTARGET program. This partnership marks a strategic pivot in defense procurement, moving away from single-product acquisition toward a flexible framework designed to leverage Flagship’s AI-driven biotechnology ecosystem against emerging biological threats.
Initial research efforts are already underway, featuring two companies from the Flagship ecosystem. Apriori Bio is utilizing its Octavia platform to design variant-resilient countermeasures by anticipating viral evolution. Simultaneously, Prologue Medicines is deploying its DELVE platform to analyze viral proteins, aiming to identify novel ways to modulate and strengthen human immune responses. According to Robert Kristovich, Director of JSTO at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the objective is to accelerate the maturation of private-sector biotechnologies to ensure military personnel remain protected against sophisticated biological challenges.
