Diego Mesa Puyo Assumes Leadership of Global Environment Facility
With over $4 billion in fresh donor commitments secured, former Colombian energy minister Diego Mesa Puyo began his four-year tenure as CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility today. His appointment marks the start of the GEF-9 funding cycle, a critical window for reaching international environmental targets by 2030.

The new CEO faces an ambitious mandate to mobilize global financial architecture toward restoration and protection efforts. His strategy focuses on scaling blended finance and deepening support for Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries. Mesa Puyo emphasized that the path to 2030 requires integrating economic growth with environmental preservation, positioning the GEF as a bridge between governments, private investors, and local communities.
