Novartis and Abogen Ink $7.2 Billion Deal for mRNA Autoimmune Therapy

A $575 million upfront payment marks the start of a new partnership between Abogen Biosciences and Novartis, as the companies move to advance ABO2203. This mRNA-encoded T-cell engager aims to reset B cells in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders, potentially shifting how the industry approaches long-term immune system regulation.

The agreement grants Novartis an exclusive worldwide license to ABO2203, a candidate designed to direct the body to produce its own T-cell engagers. By leveraging Abogen’s proprietary RNA platform, the therapy targets B-cell depletion through an in vivo mechanism, which researchers believe could outperform traditional recombinant treatments. Beyond the lead asset, Novartis holds exclusive options to license a pipeline of additional RNA-based programs developed by the Suzhou-based biotech.

Financial terms reflect the high stakes of the collaboration, with the total value of potential milestone payments reaching approximately $7.2 billion. Bo Ying, CEO of Abogen, described the deal as a departure from the company’s focus on prophylactic vaccines, highlighting the scalability of their platform in the autoimmune space. Fiona Marshall, President of Biomedical Research at Novartis, noted that the approach offers a way to achieve durable immune reset, which has historically remained a challenging objective in clinical medicine. The transaction remains subject to customary regulatory clearances before moving into the next development phase.
