Mediar Therapeutics Completes Enrollment for Phase 2 IPF Trial

Boston-based Mediar Therapeutics has finalized recruitment for its Phase 2 WISPer clinical trial, bringing 168 patients across four continents into the study. The research evaluates MTX-463, a first-in-class antibody designed to target WISP-1, a protein suspected of driving the progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

The global study, spanning more than 70 sites in North America, South America, Europe, and Australia, tests the safety and efficacy of intravenous MTX-463 infusions administered every four weeks. Researchers are primarily measuring changes in forced vital capacity over a 24-week period to assess lung function. Jeff Bornstein, Chief Medical Officer at Mediar, noted that the rapid enrollment pace reflects the urgent demand for new therapies in a field where current treatment options remain limited. The trial follows successful Phase 1 testing in healthy volunteers, which confirmed the drug was well tolerated and capable of engaging its intended biological target.

This trial operates under a licensing agreement with Eli Lilly and Company, which retains the rights to lead subsequent development and commercialization once the Phase 2 data is finalized. Beyond the WISPer study, Mediar continues to develop a broader pipeline of therapies targeting other drivers of fibrotic diseases, including EphrinB2 and SMOC2 proteins. The company maintains a specialized focus on neutralizing myofibroblasts, the cells primarily responsible for the organ scarring that characterizes chronic fibrotic conditions.
