Guo Pei’s Four Decades of Couture Unveiled in Hangzhou

The iconic yellow embroidered gown Rihanna famously wore to the 2015 Met Gala has returned to the spotlight, anchoring a sweeping retrospective of designer Guo Pei at the China National Silk Museum. The exhibition, which opened in late September, maps four decades of intricate craftsmanship and cultural fusion.

Spanning 200 haute couture pieces, the collection is divided into four thematic sections—Time, Fable, Rebirth, Building Dreams, Legend, Dream Isle Garden, and Eastern Palace Echoes. These galleries trace the evolution of Guo Pei’s aesthetic, highlighting her signature blend of traditional Chinese embroidery with modern structural design. Visitors can examine seminal series such as One Thousand and Two Nights and Samsara, alongside costumes originally commissioned for the Beijing Olympics and the CCTV Spring Festival Gala.

The Hangzhou exhibition serves as both a career retrospective and a study of textile history. By placing avant-garde couture within the China National Silk Museum’s specialized archives, the curators underscore the technical labor behind each garment. Beyond the celebrity gowns worn by stars like Liu Shishi and Dilraba, a structural paper installation offers a fresh interpretation of how these complex silhouettes are built. The exhibition remains open in the museum’s Fashion Gallery through August 31, 2027.
