During the August 25 trial, engineers mounted a new launcher to a Polaris utility vehicle, firing two 13-pound Hellhound S3 units in sequence. The effectors, which are roughly the size of a baseball bat and constructed via 3D-printing, navigated complex pre-programmed flight paths autonomously. Throughout the mission, the operator monitored both units in real time, retaining the ability to adjust or abort flights via the handheld controller.
Sheila Cummings, CEO of Cummings Aerospace, stated that the capability allows forces to compress the kill chain by putting multiple effectors on different targets simultaneously. The S3, capable of speeds exceeding 384 miles per hour and ranges beyond 60 kilometers, features a modular design. Commanders can swap between armor-piercing, electronic warfare, decoy, or blast-fragmentation modules in under two minutes without tools.
