Marco Langbroek, an aerospace specialist at Delft University of Technology, first identified the anomalous behaviour on 17 October. He noted that the Russian craft is shadowing the ICEYE-X36, a high-resolution radar satellite capable of penetrating cloud cover to track surface movements. Launched from Vandenberg in March 2024, the Finnish satellite has been a critical component of Ukraine’s surveillance network since the onset of hostilities.
Russian Satellite Manoeuvres Near Finnish Spy Craft Spark Space War Fears
A Russian military satellite, KOSMOS 2612, has begun executing precise manoeuvres in the immediate vicinity of the Finnish-operated ICEYE-X36, an orbital radar asset currently supporting Ukrainian military intelligence. Experts warn this proximity could signal the initial stages of a direct anti-satellite strike, escalating the conflict into space.

Langbroek, who previously contributed to the MH17 downing investigation, described the situation as highly concerning. The potential for an orbital kinetic engagement represents a significant shift in the nature of the conflict. By actively targeting a satellite utilized by an adversary, Russia appears to be testing the boundaries of space-based warfare, moving beyond terrestrial missile barrages toward the neutralization of enemy reconnaissance capabilities.
