Belgian Intelligence Faces Internal Turmoil Over Reynders Allegations

Allegations of a cover-up involving former European Commissioner Didier Reynders and Belgian intelligence director Hugues Brulin have triggered a fierce internal dispute. While reports suggest a conspiracy to obstruct investigations, intelligence insiders are now clashing over the actual extent of Brulin’s power to influence sensitive state dossiers.

Belgian Intelligence Faces Internal Turmoil Over Reynders Allegations

The controversy erupted after EUobserver detailed a series of WhatsApp exchanges between Brulin and Reynders, fueling claims of a coordinated effort to shield the politician from corruption inquiries. Sources cited by the Belgian newspaper Le Soir argue that Brulin, whose role focused on logistics and IT, lacked the formal authority to derail active intelligence operations. They contend that his access to secret dossiers was strictly limited to periods when senior leadership was unavailable.

Yet, the defense of Brulin’s administrative reach is being challenged by reports of professional retaliation. EUobserver maintains that Brulin held enough internal sway to jeopardize the careers of officers tracking Reynders, allegedly using minor infractions as a pretext for dismissal in at least three documented cases. As the scrutiny intensifies, claims persist that other, more influential figures within the Belgian intelligence service may have also played a role in protecting the former commissioner, deepening the rift between institutional defenders and whistleblowers.
