Big Tech Lobbies EU to Bypass GDPR Safeguards via AI Omnibus

Under the banner of fostering AI innovation, technology giants are orchestrating a sweeping push to dismantle core European data protections. New findings from Corporate Europe Observatory and LobbyControl reveal a concerted effort to create regulatory backdoors that would allow companies to harvest personal data without explicit user consent.

The proposed Digital Omnibus, introduced by the European Commission last November, serves as the primary vehicle for these changes. While Commission President Ursula von der Leyen frames the policy as an essential step to simplify regulations and bolster competitiveness in a volatile global market, critics argue the reality is far more corrosive to privacy rights. Bram Vraken, a researcher at Corporate Europe Observatory, warns that the initiative effectively creates a massive loophole that threatens to render the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) meaningless.

Legislative influence efforts have surged alongside these policy shifts. Records indicate that between November 2025 and the present, members of the European Parliament and their staff engaged in 655 meetings with lobbyists. These encounters often occur behind closed doors, masked by arguments for technological progress. If the current iteration of the Digital Omnibus clears the European Parliament, companies like Google and Meta could gain the legal green light to utilize personal information for AI training cycles without the standard requirements for user permission.
