Russian Bombs Hit Civilian Aid Site in Komyshuvakha

At least 42 people had been killed by Thursday morning after Russia dropped at least nine glide bombs on a school complex in Komyshuvakha, where humanitarian aid was being distributed. The village in Zaporizhzhia oblast lies about 15 kilometres from the front line; 33 more people were reported missing.

Some of the bombs weighed three tonnes and carried up to 1.4 tonnes of explosives, according to the source report. Russia primarily uses such weapons to destroy underground bunkers. In Komyshuvakha, the attack struck civilians rather than Ukrainian soldiers, the report said.

The casualty toll made Monday’s strike the deadliest attack on civilians in Ukraine since at least 2023. With dozens still missing and apparently buried under rubble, the death toll could rise. The report said it could become the worst such attack since the 2022 bombing of the Mariupol theatre, which bore the word “Children.”

Russian propaganda claimed the site was a base for Ukrainian soldiers or police officers. But footage released by Ukrainians on Wednesday, recorded on a police officer’s body camera, showed the attack on the school complex and, according to the report, suggested Russian forces knew they were striking a civilian location.
