GITAI Delays S3 Robotic Mission to Prioritize Space Force Contract

GITAI USA has finalized the flight model for its S3 robotic servicing satellite, but the project will wait. The company is officially deferring the mission launch until after 2028 to focus its internal resources on its prime contract for the U.S. Space Force Space-Based Interceptor program.

The S3 satellite serves as a testbed for autonomous rendezvous, docking with non-cooperative targets, and robotic maintenance. By building the spacecraft and its robotic arm entirely in-house, GITAI aims to provide life-extension services for commercial operators and disposal capabilities for government missions. The modular bus developed for this demonstration is intended to function as a standardized platform for the company’s future defense-focused LEO constellations, including upcoming missile defense and observation projects.

This shift in scheduling marks a strategic pivot for the Torrance-based firm. While the S3 hardware is effectively launch-ready following the completion of its manufacturing and assembly, the company opted to prioritize its U.S. Space Force obligations. GITAI executives argue that their vertically integrated approach—handling avionics, software, and robotics internally—allows them to meet the rigorous performance and timeline demands of defense customers more effectively than traditional models reliant on extensive supply chains.
