Colombia’s CEO Clinic Sets Global Benchmark in Medical Travel Standards

Medellín-based Clínica de Especialidades Oftalmológicas (CEO) has secured a dual milestone, becoming the first facility worldwide to achieve both the Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) Standards 1.0 and the organization’s new Integrated Accreditation Program for Medical Travel, signaling a shift toward unified clinical and international patient care.

The accreditation covers CEO’s operations across its Medellín, Envigado, and Rionegro sites. By integrating GHA’s Healthcare Organization Standards 1.0 with the Medical Travel Services 5.2 framework, the clinic has aligned its local patient services with international requirements. This process evaluates everything from infection control and surgical safety to the logistical nuances of the medical travel journey, including pre-arrival coordination and financial transparency.

General Manager José Francisco Bernal Márquez noted that the 18-month certification process involved rigorous gap assessments and staff training, which directly contributed to increased international patient volume. For an institution that performs roughly 1,000 surgeries monthly, the recognition validates a safety record that includes zero institutional surgical infections over the past eight years and a reoperation rate of just 0.8%.

Renée-Marie Stephano, CEO of Global Healthcare Accreditation, highlighted that the integrated model forces organizations to elevate their baseline performance. By treating medical travel not as a separate vertical but as a core component of clinical excellence, CEO has demonstrated that high-level safety protocols benefit both local residents and international visitors alike.
