Dallas County students post steady gains in annual STAAR assessments

Students in Dallas County grades 3–8 showed consistent improvement in reading and math scores for the 2025–26 school year, outpacing statewide math growth by two percentage points. The results, released by the Texas Education Agency, signal a broader recovery for middle schoolers impacted by pandemic-era learning disruptions.

Across the county, 11 of the 15 largest school systems improved their performance compared to the previous year. While reading proficiency grew by 1 percentage point, math scores surged by 2 percentage points. Notably, Black students in the region outperformed the state average in math growth, posting a 3 percentage point increase. Fourth-grade math served as a regional highlight, with a 5 percentage point jump in students meeting grade-level standards, a figure that eclipsed the statewide 4 percentage point gain.

Experts attribute these trends to a localized focus on high-quality instructional systems and teacher support. Sile Robinson of The Commit Partnership noted that schools are increasingly utilizing data-driven strategies to identify learning gaps early. This progress in middle school reading is particularly significant, as it suggests that students are successfully regaining foundational literacy skills that were often delayed by COVID-19. As Texas prepares to transition from the STAAR system to the Student Success Tool in 2027, these current benchmarks provide a clear roadmap for where instructional investments are yielding measurable results.
