Ethlabs brings together five former senior Ethereum Foundation researchers: Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnabé Monnot, Caspar Schwarz-Schilling, Josh Rudolf, and Julian Ma. This group previously guided the network through significant protocol upgrades, including advancements in finality, scaling, and data availability. By establishing a dedicated nonprofit home, the team intends to provide long-term stability for research that maintains Ethereum’s status as a neutral, censorship-resistant settlement layer.
The organization’s mandate centers on technical requirements for large-scale onchain activity, such as faster settlement, native asset issuance, and robust cross-chain infrastructure. While the Ethereum Foundation continues to focus on its broader mandate, Ethlabs will operate as an independent steward of the protocol. Funding for the initiative is structured to preserve research autonomy; contributions are processed through an independent grants administrator, and the lab’s leadership retains final authority over all technical directions and research priorities.
