Wilcox, a scholar of Chinese ethnic dance at the College of William & Mary, first encountered the Ningbo Performance & Arts Group’s production in 2023. While American audiences were captivated by the technical precision of the choreography, Wilcox initially found the work to be an Eastern cultural specimen viewed from afar. Her academic background helped her analyze the structure, yet the spiritual core of the protagonist remained elusive across her first two viewings in Washington and Shanghai.
The breakthrough arrived in New York, following months of exhaustive research into the 1,500-year evolution of the Mulan legend. By dissecting the choreographic choices of Han Zhen and Zhou Liya, Wilcox identified a modern sensibility in the work: the departure from traditional tropes of marriage and the redefinition of the heroine as a multifaceted individual. This shift transformed the drama from a historic retelling into a contemporary reflection on the human cost of war and female agency.
