The agreement cements a collaboration that began in 1983, when the launch of S&P 500 options first revolutionized how investors manage U.S. equity exposure. By maintaining this exclusive arrangement, Cboe aims to provide market participants with the continuity needed for their core strategies while exploring new frontiers, such as tokenized options contracts.
Cboe and S&P DJI Extend Exclusive S&P 500 Options Deal Through 2051
Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices have locked in a 25-year extension of their licensing agreement, securing Cboe’s exclusive rights to trade S&P 500 Index options until 2051. This long-term commitment preserves the bedrock of the firms' four-decade partnership while opening doors for next-generation financial product development.

Investor appetite for these instruments continues to reach historic levels. In 2025, SPX options saw record-breaking activity, hitting an annual volume of 970.6 million contracts. This performance marked a 25% increase over the previous year, securing a fourth consecutive year of record trading growth. Executives from both firms noted that the extension is designed to address this accelerating demand, ensuring that the S&P 500 benchmark remains accessible through liquid, reliable derivatives as market needs evolve.
