The uptick in Tanzanian exports underscores a broader regional trend where rising global demand is driving developers to accelerate mine builds. The Bank of Tanzania reports that gold now accounts for 47.4% of the country’s total goods export earnings, with the Lake Zone—specifically the Geita and Shinyanga regions—driving the bulk of national mineral recovery. Established giants like AngloGold Ashanti maintain a dominant presence, yet a fresh tier of developers is currently transitioning from feasibility studies to physical site works.
Tanzania Gold Exports Surge as Mining Infrastructure Expands
Tanzania’s gold sector is experiencing a significant growth spurt, with exports climbing 37.4% to $5.67 billion in the year ending July 2026. This surge coincides with a wave of new site development in the Lake Victoria Goldfield, as regional producers move from exploration into active infrastructure construction.

Among these developers, Lake Victoria Gold Ltd. is advancing its Imwelo project, recently reporting successful metallurgical testwork that identified attrition scrubbing and desliming as key processes to improve gold extraction from weathered, clay-rich ore. The company has completed initial site access roads and bulk earthworks, supported by a gold-linked financing facility. While these developments signal progress, the company cautions that these efforts precede a formal feasibility study, and production remains subject to overcoming technical and economic hurdles inherent in mine construction. Across the wider sector, companies including TRX Gold, B2Gold, and Newmont are similarly ramping up operations, reflecting a strategic industry focus on unlocking high-return assets despite fluctuating bullion prices.
