ASICS Issues Global Conservation Warning for Human Movement

Ahead of World Mental Health Day, ASICS is issuing a formal conservation warning for human movement. New global research reveals a sedentary crisis, with people reporting that 86% of their waking day is spent stationary, a trend that experts warn is fundamentally altering our physical and mental well-being.

The report, which surveyed 34,000 people across 31 countries, indicates that 53% of adults currently fail to meet recommended physical activity guidelines. By 2035, this figure is projected to climb to 56%, leaving an estimated 2.3 billion people at risk. To quantify this decline, ASICS collaborated with specialists to establish a Movement Conservation Status, categorizing activity levels as active, at risk, or endangered. Currently, nearly one in four people fall into the endangered category, performing less than 30 minutes of exercise per week.

Modern convenience is identified as the primary catalyst for this shift. With the ability to work, socialize, and shop entirely from home, physical activity is being designed out of daily routines. This sedentary lifestyle correlates with lower mental health scores; those classified as endangered report higher stress levels and lower focus than their active counterparts. To address this, ASICS has launched a nature documentary titled Human Nature, narrated by Sigourney Weaver, which examines how modern habits have replaced natural movement. Experts emphasize that the solution does not require drastic lifestyle overhauls, noting that just 15 minutes of movement can trigger a measurable uplift in mental state.
