The HUB 2026 Middle Market Profitability & Resiliency Report reveals that while 75% of companies now maintain formal enterprise risk management (ERM) programs—a 14 percentage point increase over the previous year—the internal maturity of these systems remains low. Only 37% of executives describe their risk approach as holistic, and just 17% report that risk accountability is shared across their entire workforce.
Middle Market Firms Struggle to Translate Risk Investment into Clarity
Three out of four middle market leaders admit they do not fully understand the scope of their insurance coverage, despite a significant uptick in investment toward formal risk management programs. This disconnect leaves organizations vulnerable as they navigate a fragmented threat landscape heading into 2027.

This lack of clarity is exacerbated by "risk fatigue," a phenomenon where constant exposure to high-stress threats diminishes corporate confidence. Executives are currently juggling a diverse array of pressures, with cybersecurity (45%), operational costs (43%), and AI adoption (38%) competing for top priority. Marc Cohen, CEO of HUB, noted that these defensive efforts have yet to translate into actionable business intelligence. With only 16% of organizations feeling fully confident in their current insurance posture, many remain hesitant to explore new coverage strategies, effectively stalling their ability to turn preparedness into a competitive advantage.
