California American Water Urges Conservation Ahead of Summer Heat

With summer temperatures rising across the state, California American Water is calling on residents to curb consumption and safeguard local supplies. Company leadership emphasizes that small adjustments to daily habits, particularly regarding outdoor irrigation and leak detection, are essential to managing the increased demand expected in the coming months.

California American Water Urges Conservation Ahead of Summer Heat

Sarah Leeper, president of California American Water, described conservation as a year-round commitment rather than a seasonal necessity. As the mercury climbs, the utility provider warns that nearly 30 percent of water used for landscaping can be lost to evaporation if irrigation occurs during the heat of the day. To mitigate waste, the company recommends watering during early morning or late evening hours.

Beyond irrigation, the utility highlights the impact of household maintenance. Approximately 10 percent of homes harbor leaks capable of wasting upwards of 90 gallons daily. Customers are encouraged to inspect sprinkler systems for misaligned heads, replace hoses with brooms for cleaning pavement, and apply mulch to garden beds to retain soil moisture. Those seeking to track their personal consumption can utilize the company’s MyWater portal, which offers access to two years of historical usage data and information on financial assistance programs.
